Driving home from bible study, foot on accelerator. Car sort of lurches then speed dwindles, gas no longer works. I see a road coming up, I brake and turn onto it, I discovered I lost power steering. I get on the road and try to brake, brakes are now locked up. Wait til it loses momentum, then put the car in park. Did you know I just paid this car off? Fun times...

Deep down inside, it is just a Neon....

Unfortunately, that’s the way it usually works. Or, after you pour money into one that’s paid for, and finally get everything done, as soon as you think you can move onto something else, something else on the car breaks.

I guess it’s time to get a kickass wagon!

I wish. *sigh*, we just put our extra money into converting from propane to natural gas, :/

The computer failed last month as well. At least this time it won't be an hour from home, :(.

If it helps at all, the brakes and steering don’t sound like a symptom, I think that’s just a result of the ignition cutting out.

So...it could be expensive then?

The root of all the problems is whatever made your engine cut out, which could be a myriad of things. Bad ECU, severed fuel line, etc. etc.

That sucks ZTP, sounds like it’s time to start looking for the PT’s replacement

Suggestions?
Thing is, we know this cars history, and its been faithful for 4 years, until now, :/.

I recall a story in the good book about God testing someone’s faith by besieging him with plagues and misfortune of the highest order.

I would love a free car, but no one is offering, lol.

The book of Job, Old Testament. Also the only book to mention the Behemoth and Leviathan together.
God gives permission to the devil to test Job because He knew Jobs faith was unshakable. Id look it up, because my bible is in front of me as I type this, but it’s a chronological bible, so everything is in mixed order, :/. Fascinating read though, having everything in order.
But Zoidberg, you do have a very valid point. Thankfully I haven't been worn thin yet, just frustrated. Thanks, :).

Saying the brakes locked up is typically understood to mean that the wheels have stopped spinning and you are in a skid. It sounds like that is not what happened here, you just lost the power assist. The brakes still would have worked just fine, they just needed a tremendous amount of force on the pedal to actuate them. Your real problem is that the engine stalled (losing the power assist to steering and brakes,) did you try to restart it?
Tell your mechanic that it stalled while driving, not that the brakes or steering don’t work. You can also check this out if you want to try to narrow it down yourself: http://www.salemboysauto.com/faqs/faq-51.ht…

Well, the engine was running until I turned it off. What started it all was that the accelerator pedal had no response, the rpms wouldn’t jump when I pressed it.
When I pressed the brakes, they wouldn't budge from their position, the pedal seemed locked.

Oh, I guess I made some incorrect assumptions there. Sorry, feel free to disregard most of my first comment then. However, I am standing by my assertion that the brakes and steering work and the problem is with the engine.
The brake booster and power steering booster are both driven by the vacuum in the intake manifold. Whatever the problem is, it is causing (or caused by?) a sudden loss of vacuum pressure in the manifold (as would happen if the engine stalled.)
Was the engine idling high or rough?

Let’s see, it’s a 4-spd auto, the car was in 4th gear, and I was going <=60 mph. So...the rpms should of been at around 3k, which is normally for this car. It’s basically a cruising speed.
Which sounds weird now because when I looked at the rpms after I lost the gas pedal, I think it was above 3k (?) but not higher than 4k, as I never go that high unless I’m purposely gaining speed. I was on a hilly, straight road.

OK, I’m guessing this is the non-turbo version (I did not know Chrysler offered a turbo on that thing.) It sounds like a metered air leak. That means a leak in the intake downstream of the MAF or MAP sensor. Since it happened suddenly, I would also guess that a hose fell off.
Hold on, I did some digging. For the 2010 PT Cruiser, power brakes are vacuum driven but power steering is driven by the accessory belt. If that is the case, I’m having trouble thinking how you could lose both at once with the engine still running. What is your model year?
![]() 05/06/2015 at 11:03 |

It’s a ‘08 base model, ‘06 is when the started making the 2nd gen PTs though.
Yeah, they had a regular engine and a turbo one, mines just a regular one.

OK, that year is essentially the same as the 2010. I’m stumped on this one. I don’t see how you could lose both steering and brakes simultaneously with the engine still running. I think if you pop the hood and take a look around the problem will be fairly obvious (not necessarily cheap to fix unfortunately.) Check the manifold on top of the engine for damage or disconnected hoses, check the serpentine belt for damage. Is the car sitting in your driveway or did you have it towed to a mechanic?
What is your status? Are you stranded until it gets fixed, or do you have backup transportation?

Ignore the other post. It died while driving on the way home from bible study, thankfully the pastor, and a good friend of mine, went to the study too. He waited with me til the flatbed came, then he took me home since we live less than a quarter mile apart.
The car is at a Chrysler dealership, about 15 minutes from my house. It’s my only car though, so I’m stranded at home, and working from home, until then.
I called the dealership up this morning, and there’s a long list of appointments ahead of me. So, ugh, I’m just waiting and fretting until then. Actually, I think I made myself sick stressing out about this. I know the car can get fixed, it’s just the amount I’m deathly afraid of. I'm not exactly loaded with cash, I mean, I drive a pt, :/

Would decompression in the cylinders do this? I just called the dealership, that's what they think.

I’m glad you had some friends around when it happened, and you have my sympathy. That sort of thing is never fun.
As for compression, I suppose it could be pressurizing the intake manifold if the valves are not sealing properly. That would explain the brakes, but not the steering or lack of throttle response (the engine would run rough, stumble, and missfire, not what you described.) I would be very skeptical of that explanation unless they can give you a good explanation for how it caused all three symptoms.

Plus it's a 7 yr old car, with 100k miles, that seems too soon for something like that to happen. I'm very skeptical of them right now, just waiting it out.

By no means a mechanic here but since I own a Mopar and know everything is usually fixed twice before it is right.....here is what a quick internet search provided based upon your last repair...I always assume it wasn’t fixed right the first time and mine is uner warranty and fixed by the dealer. Warning...its not encouraging to read....but sounds an awful lot like what happened to your car. http://www.ptcruiserlinks.com/forum/general-…
